Papiers Russes at Galerie Blue Square

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

The high point of Papiers Russes is Ira Waldron’s Black Square, a re-worked vintage image in which a smug, homely father takes a moment to admire his painting with his strapping sons. As a nod to the non-conformists, an umbrella term for the artists who did not adhere to the Soviet regulations on art, Waldron has replaced the neutral, presumably socialist-realist, painting of the original image with Malevich’s Black Square, one of the most contentious statements in 20th century art and certainly far from the realist agenda of Soviet art, which saw abstraction as a bourgeois phenomenon.

The exhibition brings together works on paper by a variety of contemporary Russian artists. From the established non-conformists Oscar Rabin and Vladimir Nemukhin to Igor Makarevich, one of Russia’s representative at this year’s Venice Biennale.

Papiers Russes is on at Galerie Blue Square until 06/06/09
